Abe Froman / Soophie Nun Squad split (£5.00) CD (Plan-It-X) "this is the cd version of the split LP released some time ago on harlan records (nate, of SNS’s label). in case you don’t know, SNS are 9 crazy kids from arkanasas that wear funny costumes and play rockin’, sometimes comical, theatrical punk rock. abe froman have some really great songs on this split! including that really good one that erin plays mostly alone." plan-it-x.com |
Abe Vigoda "Sky Route/Star Roof" (£8.00) 12"LP (PPM / Not Not Fun) "crawling out of inland empire’s most dismally suburban desert (chino, ca) comes abe vigoda, a non-stop teenage no-wave crew. dense rolling drums, esoteric lyrics yelled through bad amps, guitars played with screwdrivers, and 20 shows a month: these are av’s mean means, and the reason everybody knows and loves them. "sky route/star roof" is their first full length. 12 tracks of claustrophobic highway night-punk. for fans of unwound, wives, and youth. colored vinyl, silkscreened gatefold jackets. comes with a cdr version of the album too. "sky route / star roof" is an energetic piece of punk retardism." roughtrade.com |
Against Me! "Crime" (£4.00) CD (Plan-It-X) "against me are an acoustic/electric band from gainesville FL. i saw tom, the singer, play solo at a laundry matt show that my good pal mikey hot sauce set up in g-ville (way back in 2001?) and i was truly blown away. i’ve never seen a solo guitar player sing with such charisma and charm and energy. it was one of those moments when music is honestly inspirational, i was in love. they sing the anarchist anthems that hopefully our children will be singing on our communes in 30 years. this CD has 6 songs on it, and comes with a sticker. as you know, maybe. this band has moved on far beyond the laundry matt." plan-it-x.com |

CD (Marriage Records) "Idle Idol is not only spiked with brief, atmospheric instrumentals like the melodica-led "Rochester Life," the actual songs themselves are chopped and spun into crazy-quilt collages of sound, computer-manipulated by Kaffer into these strange little dub versions of themselves...Idle Idol is its own odd little beast, and those with a taste for both intimate, folkish singer/songwriters and mad scientist computer games will find much to appreciate." allmusicguide.com |
Antifamily s/t (£9.00) (Difficult Fun) "First full album by this London-based collective, Asja Auf Capri members Anja Kirschner and David Panos. A truly brilliant, interesting and entertaining mixture of Post-Punk, Electronice, Pop, Dub and Krautrock. Somewhat similar to Asja Auf Capri, but more facetted and more compacted in sounds & style! Definitie;y one of the finest surprises and highlights of 2006!" x-mist |
Antsy Pants s/t (£7003.00) CD (Plan-It-X) "kimya dawson is a wonderful girl and everywhere she goes people fall in love with her...this CD captures that feeling. this CD is a snapshot of people having fun. a party photo. it was recorded in france in fall/winter of 2005 while she was touring. she made friends in france. they formed a band and made a record. all of the kids on this record have other bands too (i think). one of them is a band called bear creek from france. leo (who sings and plays on this CD) is in bear creek. he’s 13 years old. he writes great songs. this is an 11 track collection of friends having fun. sweet mostly acoustic songs with lot’s of different people singing. kimya sings a lot too and it sounds kinda like a kimya dawson record but with some really nice additions! watch out. you might fall in love." planitx |
Asja Auf Capri "Novi Ronde" (£9.00) 12"LP (Difficult Fun) "The album kicks off with the deliciously insistent Chanson Risk ... It’s a great start - twitchy, fidgety, old-school electronics and subtly processed, whispery-then-chanting vocals. Happily, the quality is maintained throughout. There’s plenty of variety in the music too, with all sorts of bleeps, bloops, squelches and clangs going off to underpin Anja’s singing. It’s all done with a fantastic sense of playfulness and yet, brilliantly, without getting anywhere near that enemy of good music, novelty. After the wonderful bongo-on-Mars claustrophobia of Prairie, the albums finishes with the riotous knees-up wig-out of Brandstifter. It’s the happy younger sibling to Laub’s more considered, deadpan approach to electronica. It’s how smug, half-baked charlatans like Chicks On Speed and Cobra Killer ought to sound." diskant.net |
Atom & His Package "A Society Of People Named Elihu" (£7.00) LP (X-Mist) "Atom and His Package has gotta be the most original and hilarious projects I’ve heard...With his trusty sidekick, the Yamaha QY 700 sequencer, he gives us his zany world of digital and electronic mania incorporating sounds from the discotheque 80’s and beyond; however all these phunky ass beats and digital music correlates with hardcore...A witty character with good stage presence to make even the assholes in the crowd crack a smile or two." |
